Best Time

The perfect time to trek to Upper Dolpo is spring season (April to early June) and Autumn Season (September to early November). In these seasons climate remains stable, clear skies and perfect views of the snowcapped Himalayan peaks. Trails remains dry and high pass are more approachable, which makes trek secure.

Spring the act of flowering and vibrant environment, while autumn offers cultural big festivals in whole country and crystal-clear views of snowcapped stunning mountains. In this seasons you feel different vibes in the air.

Summer season (June to August) is also possible for trek, as Dolpo lies in a rain-shadow area, but anticipate occasional cloud cover.

Winter Season (late November to March) is harsh with heavy snow and temperature will be freezing so it’s better to avoid unless you’re seasoned adventurer.

Preparation and Fitness for Upper Dolpo Trek

These 28 days upper Dolpo Trek is isolated, Challenging and rough. You will be trekking at highest altitude which is about 5000 m for widen periods and need to cross multiple tough passes. Proper and suitable fitness level is required.

Fitness Requirements:

  • You don’t need to be a sports or athlete person but good health is on top.
  • If you truly want to do 28 days Upper Dolpo trek we recommend you to start trainings like hiking, stair climbing, aerobic workouts like cycling and jogging for about 2-3 months
  • Practice carrying a light backpack during training to simulate trek conditions.

Mental Preparation:

  • You need to make up your mind that you won’t find any luxury you will accommodate in basic, need walk long for days, climate will not be predictable.
  • The region is isolated—embrace the slow pace and limited comforts.

Packing Tips:

  • You must not forget to bring quality trekking gears like you need to carry firstly first aid kit, down jackets, sleeping bag, warm layers and trekking Broken-in boots.
  • As shops are sacred you must carry lite snacks, power banks, water bottle, towels etc.

Altitude Awareness:

  • Acclimatization days are included, but it’s vital to recognize signs of altitude sickness.

This trek is not recommended for solo it would be better if you hire government licensed and professional guide and porter for your safety, cultural insights and navigation.

Permits for the Upper Dolpo Trek

Trekking in Upper Dolpo requires special permits as it’s a restricted area. Trekkers must go through registered trekking agency; solo trekkers are not allowed in this region.

Here are the required permits:

Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for Upper Dolpo

  • Cost: USD 500 per person for 10 days
  • Additional Days: USD 50 Per person per day
  • Permit issued only through authorized trekking agencies

Lower Dolpo Restricted Area Permit

  • Cost: USD 20 per person per week

Shey Phoksundo National Park Permit

  • Cost: NPR 3,000 (approx. USD 25)

Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Card

  • Not required for restricted area treks (RAP replaces it)

Important Notes:

  • Minimum of 2 trekkers required to apply for RAP.
  • Bring passport copies, photos, and be prepared for permit checks en route.
