Trek Preparation Guide

Trekking in Nepal boasts breathtaking panoramas, offers warm welcomes, multiple experiences with different cultures, and much more. To kickstart an amazing experience, one needs to be well prepared. Here at Hill Walkers Home Pvt. Ltd., we strive to make you enjoy every part of your journey; therefore, here is a guide that will aid you in truly being prepared before the trek.

Physical Fitness – Train for the Terrain

While you don’t need to be an athlete to walk in Nepal, some form of basic fitness is recommended. Most treks require walking for 4-7 hours a day on a combination of uneven, steep trails with elevation added difficulties due to high altitude levels. Aim to start training and preparing 4–6 weeks prior so you gain confidence.

Fitness Tips

  • Walk or jog 3-5 times a week for half an hour.
  • Try stair climbing as well as uphill hiking.
  • Carry a backpack containing 5-7 kg while walking
  • Engage in light strength exercises along with gentle stretching.

If there are any pre-existing conditions or injuries, it is always a good idea to consult with your local doctor before trekking.

Trekking Permits – Don’t Hit the Trail Without Them

Nepal’s trekking regions are conservatively held to protect the environment and help the locals economically. For different treks, you’ll need the following permits:

  • TIMS Card (Trekker’s Information Management System) – for trekkers’ safety and monitoring.
  • National Park or Conservation Area Entry Permit – needed for Annapurna, Langtang, and Sagarmatha (Everest) regions.
  • Restricted Area Permit – needed for Mustang Upper Region, Manaslu, Dolpo, and other areas where special permission is required.
  • You must have these permissions because they are crucial, and biometric data is collected at trial locations regularly. Without these permits, you would risk paying fines, being barred from access, or both.
