Altitude Sickness and Prevention

When trekking in Nepal, you are likely to visit high-altitude areas, which have a lower oxygen concentration. The views are stunning; however, trekkers have to take caution with potentially suffering from Altitude Sickness, or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Here at Hill Walkers Home Pvt. Ltd., we always prioritize your safety. Thus, we provide the required documents and experienced guides alongside all necessary therapies for healthy traveling across the Himalayas.

What is Altitude Sickness?

As previously mentioned and defined between our services, altitude sickness tends to occur over 2500m or 8200 ft above sea level. It’s triggered by a lack of sufficient oxygen due to increasing altitude. Everyone can experience altitude sickness regardless of age and fitness levels.

Common Symptoms of AMS

A good preemptive measure against AMS includes familiarity with its symptoms. These include:

  • Headache (most common and early sign)
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Dizziness/Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath both during periods of rest as well as exercise
  • Decreased appetite
  • Insomnia or disrupted sleep cycles

Most commonly, such symptoms will arise when individuals transition from lower altitudes to higher elevations within a range of six hours to twenty-four hours after the change. If not attended to, AMS can develop into High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) or High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE); both are critical conditions that necessitate urgent descent and medical intervention.

Prevention Tips – How to Avoid Dangers

The good news is that AMS is preventable if you take the right steps. Here’s how to reduce your risk:

  • Ascend Gradually: Take it easy, don’t hustle above 2500 meters — limit yourself to 500 meter gain in a day, take rest for 3-4 days after climbing for better acclimatization.
  • Stay Hydrated: Refrain from caffeinated drinks because they will leave you dehydrated; make sure you are drinking at least 3-4 liters of water every single day.
  • Avoid Smoking as well as Drinking Alcohol: Because alcohol, alongside cigarettes, lowers oxygen intake into the body, AMS becomes more likely when consuming these substances together.
  • Eat Nutritious Meals While Maintaining a Light Diet: Heavy and oily foods should be avoided at all costs; meals must be freshly prepared, warm, and rich in carbohydrates with sufficient caloric content.
  • Pay Attention To Your Bodily Signals: As symptoms start appearing, taking a break, slowing down, or coming to a complete stop helps; never force yourself by trying to match someone else’s pace.

In Hill Walkers Home Pvt Ltd., all treks are planned with strategic rest days and gradual pacing so that the body’s adaptation mechanisms can effectively manage increasing altitude challenges.

Medication

Diamox (Acetazolamide) is prescribed for the prevention and treatment of altitude amnesia. It aids in the acclimatization process. Consult your medical doctor for other health conditions or allergies before considering it. Like many other drugs, Diamonds may have mild side effects, like increased urination or even tingling fingers, while not being overly bothersome.

Emergency Protocol – When to Act Rapidly

Anaesthesia ascending sickness at certain altitudes can be rare, but serious cases might elevate to:

  • HACE: High Altitude Cerebral Edema – swelling in the brain
  • HAPE: High altitude pulmonary edema – fluid build-up in lungs

Some signs of these are:

  • Confusion with an inability to walk
  • Extreme shortness of breath while resting
  • Chest tightness
  • Cyanosis (blue lips or fingertips).

These require an immediate descent to lower altitudes, and oxygen therapy or helicopter evacuation may be needed. Remember, they cannot take chances waiting it out.

Our guides at Hill Walkers Home Pvt Ltd are fully trained to manage altitude emergencies. We ensure all our first aid kits are well stocked, have access to local health posts, and arrange emergency helicopter rescues when required.

The mountains are beautiful but demanding. Respecting their power and being informed can mean the difference between a safe journey and a dangerous one. At Hill Walkers Home Pvt. Ltd., we prioritize safety over the summit. Your health is more important than reaching the final destination.
